The Defenders stars Charlie Cox, Mike Colter and Finn Jones on superhero team-up

THE Defenders is what you would call "event TV" - a team-up of Marvel's street-level heroes to kick some villainous arse to kingdom come (well, hopefully). It's a series almost four years in the making and it follows the roll-out of five seasons of solo adventures with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. It's been called Marvel's TV version of a mini-Avengers. Except instead of saving the universe, they're saving a city. All eight episodes of the highly anticipated Netflix show debut on the streaming service on Friday night so you can kiss your weekend goodbye. News.com.au caught up with three of the show's four stars — Charlie Cox (Daredevil/Matt Murock), Mike Colter (Luke Cage) and Finn Jones (Iron Fist/Danny Rand) — on the New York set of The Defenders for a chat about what to expect when four very different heroes are forced to work together.

Here's how The Defenders launches Phase 2 of Marvel's Netflix universe

By Morgan Jeffery. It's all been building to this... and now Marvel's big team-up series The Defenders will launch the next phase of its Netflix shows. Finn Jones – who plays Danny Rand / Iron Fist – told Digital Spy that the eight-part series "feels like the end of Phase One" and "the beginning of another phase". "Let's just say there are certain events that happen at the end of The Defenders which are going to rock everyone's world," he hinted. "So people aren't going to be the same after the end of The Defenders."

'The Defenders': TV Review

Tim Goodman. Despite glaring flaws, the new Marvel show on Netflix becomes an enjoyable mashup of disparate heroes trying to save New York. There is a scene in The Defenders, the latest Netflix series that mashes up four different shows from the Marvel Universe that aired previously on the streaming outlet, that's about as near to perfect as a scene could be. In the fourth episode Iron Fist, played by Finn Jones, is fully embracing his dubious rich-white-guy background as alter ego Danny Rand, reacting good-naturedly to the light mockery the other more plausibly heroic characters — Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) and Matt Murdock, aka Daredevil (Charlie Cox) —  are subjecting him to. It's a successful meshing of the four characters, something The Defenders fights hard but not always successfully to achieve, and once it feels natural and starts to elicit the "OK, let's do this" vibe from the viewers (and the characters themselves), it's both fun to watch and laudable.

Marvel's 'Defenders' finds fun in superhero team-up

The Marvel model for success 04:17. (CNN) The product of meticulous planning, "Marvel's The Defenders" starts slowly but rewards patience, gradually uniting its "street level" heroes against a somewhat amorphous but bigger-than-any-one-can-handle threat. Cast as the anti-Avengers, this latest Netflix show underscores Marvel's ambitions and ability to wring value out of characters that aren't exactly household names. Perhaps inevitably, "Defenders" limps along a bit in the early going (four episodes were previewed), juggling not only its four superheroes -- Luke Cage (Mike Colter), Jessica Jones (Kristen Ritter), Danny Rand/Iron Fist (Finn Jones), and Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox) -- but their assorted sidekicks from previous stand-alone adventures. Even for Marvel aficionados, that's a lot to process.

Will 'The Defenders' Return For Season 2? The Heroes' Next Team-Up Could Be Years Away

By JEFFERSON GRUBBS. After the post-credits scene of 2008's Iron Man teased the formation of the Avengers, moviegoers had to wait four years for the Marvel Cinematic Universe to lay the foundation for that climactic superhero team-up. Netflix subscribers have been waiting just as patiently for the service's Marvel shows to collide in the much-hyped crossover miniseries, which is finally hitting screens on Aug. 18. But something tells me that the eight action-packed episodes are going to leave fans wanting more. So how long will it be until Matt Murdock, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Danny Rand all join forces again? Will The Defenders return for Season 2?

Who's Alexandra On 'The Defenders'? This Villain Is As Mysterious As She Is Dangerous

When The Defenders debuts Aug. 18, fans will finally see the epic Marvel team-up Netflix has been building toward for years. The show unites Hell's Kitchen anti-heroes Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, Daredevil, and the recently inducted Iron Fist around a common enemy: Alexandra, a sophisticated, all-powerful villain played by Sigourney Weaver. But only a few weeks out from the premiere, little is known about their enigmatic foe, leaving viewers in the dark about who Alexandra from The Defenders is and what exactly she's capable of.

Review: Netflix's Defenders Is Less Than the Sum of Its Superheroes

From left, Mike Colter (as Luke Cage), Krysten Ritter (as Jessica Jones) and Charlie Cox (as Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil) in "Marvel's The Defenders" Credit Jessica Miglio/Netflix. Netflix and Marvel have collaborated on four comics-based television series over the last few years, and while they share a setting (New York) and a few overlapping characters, they’re pretty distinct. You wouldn’t confuse "Jessica Jones" with "Iron Fist" or "Daredevil" with "Luke Cage.". Now there’s a fifth show, "Marvel's The Defenders," available Friday on Netflix, that brings the four heroes together to form a superpowered crime-fighting team. Marvel has done this before, combining characters to assemble the blockbuster Avengers movies.

This Alexander Hamilton Graphic Biography Is A Deep-Dive Into The History Of The Hero And Scholar

We all know the story by now. Lin-Manuel Miranda read an Alexander Hamilton biography by Ron Chernow on vacation, and the rest was history. He wrote the smash-hit Broadway musical Hamilton, which has transcended the stage since its release in 2015 to become a cultural phenomenon. And it seems everyone has been capitalizing on the show's success, from the many Hamilton exhibits that have opened throughout the country, to the Hamilton books that have been finding their way to shelves in a steady stream. But for Jonathan Hennessey, who has been a graphic nonfiction author for more than a decade, the idea of trying to live up to the musical's well-deserved hype was never the main goal.

Lin-Manuel Miranda leads the 'Hamilton' ticket lottery and a mini-concert in Hollywood

Lin-Manuel Miranda took the stage Wednesday - not inside the Hollywood Pantages Theatre, where “Hamilton” has its opening night, but outside the building along Hollywood Boulevard, where fans amassed for a “Hamilton” ticket lottery and mini-concert. Undeterred by slim odds, a harsh sun and the screeching throng of hope, an estimated 2,500 people showed up to score one of 40 tickets — each just $10 — to the musical’s opening. More important to many: a glimpse of Miranda, the show’s composer, lyricist, book writer and original Alexander Hamilton.
