13 Unusual Places to Go Skiing

Yesterday National Geographic brought us 10 great trips to take this spring. Today, the travel experts at Nat Geo are offering us a list of 13 unusual places to go skiing. These are destinations that you would traditionally think of as a place to hit the slopes, some of which are completely unexpected and quirky.

Some of the places that earn a spot on this list include Mauna Kea, Hawaii, where it is possible to ski from the peak of the Mauna Kea volcano, which receives snow a couple of times each winter. Other destinations include Turner Ski Area in Montana, which is a volunteer run resort located in a remote mountain region, and Beartooth Basin Summer Ski Area – also in Montana – which actually opens in the spring for good off-season skiing.

The other locations on Nat Geo's list are equally interesting and offer some unique aspects to the experience that is unlike just about any other place you'll find in the U.S. The resorts range all over the country, from the East Coast to the West. So, no matter where you are, chances are one of these places isn't far from where you live.

Check out the full list here, and start making your plans for hitting the slopes yet this spring.

Video: Take a 90-Second Road Trip Through Scenic Montana

Want to take a road trip through Montana? Have 90 seconds to kill? Than this video is perfect for you. It comes our way courtesy of National Geographic Traveler, and gives us an all-too-short glimpse of one of my favorite places on Earth. From mountain landscapes, to raging rivers, to pristine forests, Montana has it all. And we get a brief look at it in this clip. It definitely makes me want to hit the road!

Video: Ice Climbing in Montana with Conrad Anker and Kris Erickson

One of the more beautiful and thoughtful climbing videos I've seen in sometime, this short film takes us to the backcountry of Montana where Conrad Anker and Kris Erickson attempt to complete a new route called Nutcracker in the Hyalite Canyon region near Bozeman. The winter ascent follows a path that is mixed rock and ice along a beautiful line amongst stunning scenery. The 12-minute video follows the team as they climb, with some good insights and introspection thrown in along the way. Definitely a great piece of work, and well worth a bit of your time today.

Video: Sled Dogs - More Than Meets the Eye

This video comes our way courtesy of our friends at National Geographic. It was filmed in West Yellowstone, Montana, were sled dog mushers compete each year in the Rodeo Run, a two-day race through that spectacular part of the country. The video introduces us to these amazing dogs, who simply love to run, and gives us a glimpse of the bond they share with their owners. With the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod just weeks away at this point, it seems a fitting video to share. I hope you enjoy.

Video: Driving The "Going to the Sun" Road in Glacier National Park

Slicing through Glacier National Park, the "Going to the Sun" road, just might be the most scenic drive in North America. The 53-mile (85 km) stretch of highway passes thick forests, alpine lakes, and snowcapped peaks that will captivate any traveler. The video below captures the spirit of that ride incredibly well, and has the perfect music to accompany it. Enjoy!
